For Patients Having Radiation

What is Mepitel® Film?

  • Mepitel® Film is a gentle, see-through, breathable film. It protects your skin from friction (rubbing) and moisture after your radiation treatment. This may reduce the skin reaction that can occur with treatment.
  • Most patients find it comfortable to wear.

How Do I Get Mepitel® Film?

  • Buy the Mepitel Film at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre pharmacy (located on the 4th floor).
  • Show this pamphlet to the pharmacy
  • You will need 3 or 4 large sheets to cover the body part being treated. Large sheets cost about $9.00 each; small sheets cost about $4.00 each.
  • Bring the Mepitel® Film with you to your first
appointment. Your name will be put on your extra film and stored for you at the cancer centre during your treatment.

How is Mepitel® Film put on?

  • Mepitel® Film is put on by a radiation therapist on your first day of treatment.
  • It is only put on the body part where you are getting radiation.
  • Clean your skin. Do not put on lotions or creams.
  • You will learn how and when to take the film off on your last radiation treatment visit or during a follow-up phone call.

How Do I Care for My Skin?

  • Try to avoid direct water spray and soap to the film when you shower.
  • Avoid scrubbing or rubbing with your hands or towels.
  • Pat the film gently to dry yourself after your shower.
  • Do not take baths, use hot tubs or swimming pools. This may cause your film to come off.
  • Keep your exercise at a gentle level. Sweat may cause the Mepitel® Film to come off.

What Should I Wear?

  • Try not to wear a bra. You can wear a soft cup or sports bra if needed.
  • A Dri-FIT top may help the Mepitel® Film stick better to your skin. This helps keeps your skin dry and reduces friction.

What If the Mepitel® Film Comes Off?

  • If your film begins to come off while on treatment, your radiation therapist will trim the film edges.
  • If your film comes off at home, you may trim any rolled edges with clean scissors. Ask someone to help you.

When Your Radiation Treatment is Done

  • Do not remove your film after your last treatment.
  • Your Mepitel® Film should stay on your skin for about two weeks after your last treatment.
  • Let the film peel off on its own after all your treatments are done.
  • Do not force the Mepitel® off.
  • If your Mepitel® does not come off on its own after two weeks, you can slowly roll the film off.
