Colorectal Cancer Screening

As of June 24, 2019, the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is the recommended screening test in Ontario for people at average risk.

Key FIT Information

Most adults 50–74 can screen for colon cancer with a free, at-home stool test (FIT) every 2 years. It’s simple, painless, and mailed to their home. If the result is positive (abnormal), a colonoscopy checks things more closely.

Who should get screened?

  • Ages 50–74, no symptoms, average risk: Do a FIT every 2 years.
  • Ages 75+: Talk with your clinician about whether to continue screening
  • Increased risk (family history): If a parent, sibling, or child had colorectal cancer, you need colonoscopy instead of FIT—start at age 50 or 10 years earlier than your relative’s diagnosis (whichever comes first).
    • If your relative was <60, repeat every 5 years.
    • If your relative was ≥60, repeat every 10 years.
