As of June 24, 2019, the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is the recommended screening test in Ontario for people at average risk.
Most adults 50–74 can screen for colon cancer with a free, at-home stool test (FIT) every 2 years. It’s simple, painless, and mailed to their home. If the result is positive (abnormal), a colonoscopy checks things more closely.
If your patient:
Symptoms like persistent bleeding, bowel habit changes, unexplained weight loss, or ongoing abdominal pain need assessment—you may refer your patient directly for a colonoscopy.
An abnormal FIT doesn’t always mean cancer, but it does mean more testing is needed. Your patient should have a colonoscopy within 8 weeks to find the cause and remove any polyps.
Free with OHIP. FIT and screening colonoscopy are covered for eligible Ontarians.
