A sitz bath is a helpful way to reduce the discomfort you may be experiencing in the anal area and to help keep the area clean after urination and bowel movements.

To make a sitz bath:

  • mix 2 teaspoons of salt or baking soda with 1 litre (4 cups) of lukewarm water
  • the solution may either be poured into a sitz bath which fits in the toilet (can be purchased at Healthcare Pharmacy or any drug store) OR poured into the bath tub (extra solution may be needed to use in the bath tub)
  • soak your buttocks in the sitz bath or tub for 10-15 minutes
  • gently pat the area dry, or air dry it after the bath
  • repeat 2-3 times a day, or after each bowel movement
