Child and Youth Resources

The Children & Youth Unit cares for children and teens who need to stay in the hospital. This guide shares what to expect during a hospital stay and how parents and care partners can support their child.

What to Bring

  • entertainment like toys or games
  • soothers or bottles that your child uses at home
  • diapers (if needed)
  • private insurance information
  • any medicines your child takes

A pharmacist will review your child’s medicines. We will keep them in a locked area until your child is sent home. To keep other patients safe, please do not keep medicine in your child’s room.

If you bring electrical items from home, they must be checked for safety. Ask your nurse for help with this.

What to Expect

Safety

Your child’s safety is our top priority. Here are some simple ways you can help keep your child safe:

  • Ask visitors not to come if they are sick.
  • Clean your hands often to stop the spread of germs.
  • Let a nurse know if you must leave your child without an adult.
  • Follow any safety or isolation signs on your child’s door.
  • If your child is in isolation, the care team will explain extra steps to keep everyone safe.

Supporting Your Child’s Care

Our team is here to support your child and family during the hospital stay:

  • Child life specialists: Help make your child’s stay less stressful with games, activities, and support during procedures.
  • Social workers: Help families cope with stressful situations while in the hospital.
  • Spiritual care providers: Support you and your child when you have questions about hope, meaning, or beliefs.
