Understanding the cost of your care is important — and you are not alone.

We are here to help you with your medical bills and insurance when you visit Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN). Our team makes the process simple, so you can focus on your health.

Understanding Hospital Fees

You may have heard that healthcare in Canada is free, but that is not entirely true. Every hospital service has a cost, but if you live in Ontario and have a valid health card, the province pays most costs for you through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

Some services are not covered under OHIP. If you do not have private insurance, you may need to pay for them. Patients without health insurance or those visiting from another country will also have to pay for their care.

Paying Your Bill

Our Patient Accounts Team can help you pay your bill for WRHN services. We accept payment by debit card, Visa, MasterCard, cheque, bank draft, and money order.

You will need to pay your bill to the site where you received care. Please include your medical record number (MRN) when you pay your bill. You can find your MRN on the top right or lower left corner of your bill.

Here are more details about the different ways you can pay your bill:

Insurance

Health insurance helps pay for medical care, so you do not have to cover all the costs yourself. It makes it easier to get the care you need.

If you live in Ontario and have a valid health card, you are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). OHIP pays for most healthcare services, so you can get care at no cost. You will need to bring your health card with you when you visit a doctor or use healthcare services.

Private health insurance can also help you afford the care you need. It helps pay for services OHIP does not cover, like prescription medicine, dental care, and eye care. Many people get private insurance through their job, but you can also buy it for yourself from an insurance provider.

Patients Without OHIP & International Patients

We want to help make sure your hospital care is covered. If you have health insurance from another Canadian province or the federal government, please give us your insurance details when you arrive. This includes plans like:

  • Canadian Armed Forces
  • Workers’ Safety Insurance Board
  • Interim Federal Health Program for refugees
  • University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for students

We will bill your insurance provider directly. If your plan does not cover something, you will need to pay for it. Contact your insurance provider if you have questions about what services will be covered. If you visited WRHN and did not give us your insurance information, contact us as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will get a bill in the mail. You can call the Patient Accounts Team at:

  • WRHN @ Midtown and Chicopee at 519-749-4300, ext. 2604
  • WRHN @ Queen’s Blvd. at 519-749-6660

If you do not have health insurance or are visiting from another country, you will need to pay for your care, such as:

  • emergency visits, clinic visits, surgery, and rehabilitation
  • doctor’s fees, lab tests, X-rays, MRIs, and other scans
  • hospital rooms
  • childbirth and newborn care
  • ambulance services

If you have private insurance from a Canadian company, we can bill them directly for your hospital fees. However, if your insurance is from outside of Canada, you need to pay for your visit and submit the cost to your insurance provider.

Childbirth Fees for Patients Without Insurance

Having a baby is an exciting journey. Our goal is to give you clear, supportive information to help you prepare for childbirth at WRHN.

If you are not a Canadian resident and do not have health insurance, you will need to pay for your care. If you are unsure about your residency status in Canada, you can find more information on the Government of Canada’s website. We are here to help you understand the costs and what to expect.

Labour & Childbirth Fees

The labour and childbirth deposit is $10,000. This covers care during delivery, medicine, lab tests, your hospital room, and care for your baby. The total cost of your stay will depend on what care you and your baby need.

After your stay, you will get an account statement with the cost of your care. Any unused money from your deposit will be returned to you. If your care costs more than your deposit, you will have to pay extra.

Doctor Fees

When you give birth, doctor fees are billed separately from your labour and childbirth deposit. You can talk to your doctor for more information.

Prenatal Care Fees

Prenatal care is the care you get while you are pregnant to help keep you and your baby healthy. To get prenatal care at WRHN, you have to pay a deposit to both the Hospital and the doctor first. Then, we will assign you a doctor (obstetrician). We will also explain all the fees at your first appointment.

These documents share more information about childbirth services and fees for patients without insurance:

Ambulance Fees

If you need an ambulance for a medical emergency in Ontario, hospitals must charge you a fee. This fee is set by the Ontario Ministry of Health:

  • If you have a valid Ontario health card, the fee for ambulance services is $45.
  • If you do not have a valid Ontario health card, the fee is $240.
