The Waterloo Wellington Research Ethics Board (WWREB) makes sure that research done with people, their personal information, or body samples is safe and fair. This includes research at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) and Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Before starting any research at these places, you must get approval from WWREB, unless another approved board has already reviewed it (like the Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board).

Before research can start at the hospitals, the WWREB must approve it. If another trusted group, like the Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board, has already approved it, WWREB approval is not needed.

The WWREB office works online only. All meetings happen virtually, not in person. Phone calls and emails are also checked and replied to often. To send an application, ask a question, or share documents, email [email protected].

Before Applying for Ethics Review

Before WWREB can review your study, you must get administrative approval at the hospital(s) where the research will take place. Each hospital has its own process and schedule for reviewing and approving studies. Contact the hospital(s) directly to learn more.

University of Waterloo Researchers

Researchers from the University of Waterloo who want to do research at the hospitals must follow a coordinated ethics review process. More information is available through the University of Waterloo’s Research Department.

WWREB Meeting Schedule

Studies must get administrative approval from the hospital(s) before being submitted for ethics review.

The WWREB meets the first Wednesday of every month. To review your study, we must get your completed study package in advance. The deadline to submit the package is the second Wednesday of the month before the meeting.

The WWREB will review new studies, changes to studies, yearly updates, problems, study endings, and changes to the research team in the order we receive them.
