Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) supports mental health at every stage of life. We work with each patient to help them get the care they need.
Our team provides care for children, youth, adults, and seniors. They are trained to help with a wide range of concerns — from anxiety and depression to complex mental health conditions and substance use.
Services include assessments, treatments, and follow-up support. We offer care both for those staying in the hospital and those coming in for appointments or clinic visits. You may be referred for services during a hospital stay, your primary care provider, a doctor, or a nurse practitioner can also refer you.

If you are in crisis, WRHN offers mental health and addiction assessments in the Emergency Department. Emergency services are available at WRHN @ Midtown, 24 hours a day.
When you come for emergency care, a triage nurse will meet with you to talk about your mental health concerns. They may suggest crisis services to help you. You can also ask to speak with a crisis team member for more support.
Crisis service team members will give you an assessment and share options for next steps. You will also be seen by an emergency doctor. They may have the on-call psychiatrist assess you to help decide if you need to stay in the hospital for care.
The Extended Assessment Unit is a safe, supportive place for us to continue to assess and observe you for up to 24 hours. During your stay, the team will learn more about your needs and figure out what services would be most helpful for you.
The unit has six beds for children, youth, and adults. Your care team may include nurses, social workers, and psychiatrists. Talk to your care team if you would like to have visitors while staying in the unit.

Our 58-bed unit offers short-term hospital care. We support adults who need extra help with their mental health. The unit also has an intensive care area for those who need the highest level of care in a safe, secure environment.
Our team of mental health professionals provides many types of support and treatment. You may be admitted to the unit through the Emergency Department or our outpatient services. The team will plan your care with you and help you return to the community.
Our team helps adults get mental health care without staying in the hospital. We work with you to provide treatment, guidance, education, and support. Our goal is to help you manage your mental health better and improve your day-to-day life.
This program supports adults who come to the Emergency Department for mental health services. Our team offers follow-up appointments and short-term care.
The Dual Diagnosis Clinic helps adults who have an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder and experience anxiety, mood disorders, or other mental health related challenges. Our team offers guidance about medicine and short-term follow-up care, usually up to four sessions. After, your family doctor will continue to manage your care.
Hazelglen is a short-term program for adults who are in a serious mental health crisis and live in Waterloo Region. You may be referred to Hazelglen after being seen in our Emergency Department. Our goal is to help patients get through the crisis without needing to stay in the hospital. Most people participate in the program for four to 12 weeks.
Before you leave the program, the team will help create a plan for follow-up care with your family doctor and connect you with support and resources in the community.
The Mount Hope Day Program is a seven-week program for adults with a serious mental illness. It focuses on recovery, safety planning, wellness goals, and connecting with community resources.
You will take part in sessions to help you build coping skills, learn to manage your emotions, and improve self-care. Each week, you will come for two half-day group sessions and one individual session with a team member.
The Psychiatric Consultation Clinic offers one-time appointments for adults in Waterloo Region. Our team can confirm your diagnosis and give advice about medicine to help you manage it. This information is also shared with your family doctor to support your care.
The clinic helps adults who need short-term support for mental health concerns. Our team provides assessments, treatment, and guidance on medicines for mental health conditions.
A psychiatrist will work with you to find medicine to treat your symptoms. They will monitor and adjust your medicine until they find what works best for you. After, your family doctor or a local clinic will continue your care.
Other adult outpatient services include the Assertive Community Treatment Team, the Clozapine Clinic, the Community Outreach Treatment Team, and the Injection Clinic.
Our mental health services help children and youth cope, build skills, and feel more confident in their daily lives. We offer support during a short hospital stay or while you live at home. Our team partners with families and care partners to provide focused support, treatment, and guidance.
The Child and Adolescent Inpatient Program (CAIP) is for children and youth age 17 and under. Our inpatient unit is a safe, supportive place for those who need a higher level of mental health care. Through a short hospital stay, we can help support and stabilize you if you are experiencing a crisis. As a regional program, we work with emergency departments across Waterloo Wellington to coordinate hospital stays.
Our secure, 21-bed unit offers 24/7 care from a skilled team of mental health professionals. The unit also has a secure observation area for those who need the highest level of care in a safe environment. We tailor care to meet each patient’s needs. Our goal is to help you become ready for the next steps in your care.
Our team supports children and youth in Kitchener and Waterloo who need mental health care but do not need to stay in the hospital. We work with families and care partners to give you guidance, treatment, and support in a safe, welcoming setting.
These services help children under the age of six who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health challenges. We offer consultations, assessments, recommendations, and treatment to support each child’s needs.

The eating disorders program at WRHN cares for children and youth ages seven to 18 in Waterloo Region who are experiencing an eating disorder.
Our specialized mental health units support people from across Waterloo Region. Our team cares for adults who need to stay in the hospital for longer-term treatment. We work with you to help you recover, become more independent, and improve your daily life.
The Adult Specialized Mental Health Unit is a 38-bed inpatient unit. It offers longer-term care to help you get ready to return to the community. We work with you and your care partners to understand your needs, provide treatment, and help you plan for the future.
This unit is a 12-bed unit for seniors who have a cognitive impairment, often related to dementia. Cognitive impairments are changes in how the brain works. They can affect memory, attention, problem-solving, judgement, or understanding.
Patients are admitted to the unit for assessments and to manage responsive behaviours. Responsive behaviors are some of the ways someone with dementia may try to communicate when they are feeling scared, confused, or upset. These include aggression, wandering, physical resistance, or agitation.
The regional Withdrawal Management Centre at WRHN is a safe, structured place for people age 16 and older to manage withdrawal from alcohol or drugs. The program takes place in a residential setting. Team members are available 24 hours a day to offer support, monitor symptoms, and help you work towards recovery. Services include:
