Testing Your Blood Sugar

Before breakfast, check your blood sugar level. This is a fasting blood sugar test. It should be 5.2 mmol/L or less.

Two hours after each meal, check your blood sugar level. It should be 6.6 mmol/L or less.

We will review your blood glucose meter results with you at your follow-up appointment at the Diabetes Education Center the next week.

Supplies You Need

  • Blood glucose monitor kit
  • Blood glucose test strips
  • Delica lancing device
  • Delica lancets
  • Data logbook

How to Test Your Blood Sugar

  1. Prepare your finger. Wash hands in warm water and dry.
  2. Load the lancet device with the lancet. Slide the white bar until it clicks.
  3. Insert a test strip into the monitor.
  4. Hang your arm down at your side briefly. This lets blood flow to your fingertips.
  5. Gently press lancet device against the fleshy side of one finger. Press the release button (green). Wait a few seconds to allow a droplet of blood to form.
  6. Touch and hold the drop of blood to the edge of the test strip at the darker stripe. Fill the dark stripe completely.
  7. The blood glucose results will be displayed.
  8. Record reading in your logbook.
