Child and Youth Resources

The clinics at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) offer care for ongoing health needs and follow-up visits. This guide shares information about appointments and what children and families can expect.

Appointment Information

To get an appointment, your child needs a referral from their doctor or nurse practitioner. A referral is when your child’s doctor sends us the medical information we need to book the appointment. Once we get their referral, our team will call you to set up an appointment.

  • Changing or cancelling an appointment: Call us 519-749-4300, ext. 5590 to change or cancel a visit.
  • If your child is sick: Call your family doctor or go to an urgent care clinic for care outside of our clinics.
  • Emergencies: Call 911 or go to the Emergency Department at WRHN @ Midtown (835 King St. W. in Kitchener).

What to Bring

  • your child’s Ontario health card
  • snacks for your child
  • diapers (if needed)

Safety

Many children who visit our clinics can get sick more easily. To protect everyone:

  • Visitors: Only you and your child should come to their appointment.
  • Chicken pox: Do not come to the clinic for three weeks after having or being near someone with chicken pox. This applies to anyone who comes to the clinic.
  • Cleaning your hands: Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer often.

Supporting Your Child’s Care

A child life specialist can support your child during their clinic visits. Child life specialists:

  • help children understand and cope with their illness
  • prepare children for procedure so they feel more comfortable
  • use play and other activities to support children of all ages
  • If your family needs other support or resources, talk to the child life specialist. We welcome your questions and are here to help.

Share Your Feedback

When you share your compliments and concerns, you help make care better. We value hearing from patients, families, care partners, and community members. Your feedback helps us understand what we are doing well and where we can improve.
