Located in Waterloo, north of the universities, this land will soon be home to Waterloo Region’s new hospital — a place where nature, community, and healing will come together to reimage care for our growing communities.
Through Waterloo Regional Health Network’s Redevelopment Program, the WRHN @ The University project will create a modern healthcare environment designed to better serve patients, families, and healthcare teams for generations to come.
This is more than a new hospital. It’s a new future for healthcare in Waterloo Region
In April 2022, the Government of Ontario provided WRHN (at the time Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital) with a $5-million capital planning grant to support planning for a new shared state-of-the-art hospital and to modernize some of our existing hospital buildings. That commitment was renewed in July 2025, when the Government of Ontario provided WRHN with another $10-million planning grant to continue our work. In June 2025, we submitted our functional program (parts 1A and 1B) to the Ministry of Health which is subject to change following engagements with the Ministry and the community.
These projects have multiple stages of planning and can take, on average, 10 years or longer to complete. We will continue to provide high-quality care across both of our hospitals as we put plans in place to modernize and expand hospital infrastructure for our growing community.
In 2020, WRHN (previously Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital) began planning together for a new hospital
In June , we submitted our first submission to the Ministry of Health (Stage 1.1 – Pre-Capital Submission)
As this project comes together, WRHN will continue to provide high-quality care across all sites.

Creating an environment that is welcoming and inclusive, where everyone can access the best health care and innovation is a way of being. It will be a place where patients receive care, their loved ones/visitors find comfort and care and service teams excel. Rooted in our history, designed for today’s needs, and prepared for tomorrow’s challenges, the hospital will promote community wellbeing and champion environmental sustainability.
In 2024, WRHN undertook a visioning study for the design of Waterloo Region’s New Hospital. With over 1000 hospital team members, patients, family members, and community members involved in this work, the outcome was a design vision statement and themes that will guide the Redevelopment Team’s approach to the new hospital project as well as all redevelopment work.
